Omega 3 and Omega 6, what are they?

Omega-3s and omega-6s are essential fatty acids, meaning fats that animals need to obtain through their diet because they cannot synthesize them on their own. These fatty acids are fundamental for the proper functioning of the body and play several crucial roles in health.

• Omega-3s: Omega-3s are known for their role in promoting cardiovascular and brain health. There are three main types of omega-3s:
• Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
• Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
• Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
• EPA and DHA are primarily found in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and cod, while ALA is present in flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts. Omega-3s help reduce inflammation, improve cognitive function, support the heart, and may have benefits for the skin, eyes, and more.
• Omega-6s: Omega-6s are also essential fatty acids and are present in a variety of common foods, including vegetable oils such as corn oil, sunflower oil, and soybean oil. Linoleic acid is one of the main omega-6s. However, while omega-6s are important for health, it is crucial to maintain a balance between omega-3s and omega-6s in the diet. An excess of omega-6s compared to omega-3s can contribute to chronic inflammation in the body, which is associated with numerous diseases, including heart disease and autoimmune conditions.

In general, it is advisable to provide our dogs with a balanced diet that includes both omega-3 and omega-6 sources to promote overall health. 

It is important to pay attention to the quality of vegetable oils used in cooking and try to reduce the consumption of omega-6 rich oils in favor of oils richer in omega-3s, such as olive oil or flaxseed oil. Additionally, omega-3 supplements are commonly used to ensure adequate intake of these fatty acids, especially for those who do not consume enough fatty fish in their diet.
